Andy Sturgeon Finalist for two garden design awards

We’re delighted to announce that Andy Sturgeon Design has been shortlisted for two garden awards. The Mediterranean Garden at Beningbrough and Horatio’s Northern Ireland are both finalists for the SGLD Awards 2027.

A new garden in a historic landscape

The Mediterranean Garden is part of a long-term masterplan for the National Trust ‘s Beningbrough Hall. What was a previously underused area of amenity grass has been transformed into a resilient, immersive and biodiverse garden that responds to both the site’s heritage significance and the challenges of climate change. A Mediterranean Garden seemed completely appropriate. It reflects the estate’s historic relationship with Italy and Mediterranean landscapes. The resulting landscape introduces a gravel garden comprising more than 4,000 plants largely drawn from Mediterranean climate regions across the world. This design responds to increasingly hot, dry summers and wetter winters. And the garden is completely accessible right down to the wheelchair friendly stepping stones.

This is the second award nomination for Beningbrough which is also shortlisted for a Landscape Institute Award

A therapeutic garden for patients and families

Horatio’s Northern Ireland aims to improve patient connections with nature in a biodiverse therapeutic landscape. There is over 900 sqm of new planting, mixed native hedging and specimen trees providing seasonally rich habitats for pollinators and wildlife. We introduced special raised garden planters where patients in wheelchairs could easily garden and the greenhouse can comfortably accommodate a hospital bed. In this garden nature, horticulture and social interaction become active components of the rehabilitation process.

The winners of the awards will be announced in February 2027.
