Beningbrough
client: national trust
completed: 2024
In 2016 as part of the 300th anniversary celebrations of Beningbrough, Andy Sturgeon Design was appointed by the National Trust to create a long term plan to refresh, improve, and in some areas re-design the seven acre garden. The Mediterranean Garden follows our work creating the pergola, and is part of our ten year masterplan for the property.
Inspired by the first owner of the present house, John Bourchier and his travels to Italy, we have created a Mediterranean garden. Incorporating the existing slopes, we have created locally sourced York stone walls that rise from the ground providing places to sit or holding trickling water chutes that feed a rill and pond. The gravel garden has year-round interest and views of the house and to the surrounding countryside have been preserved and framed. Water tanks have also been included that will capture excess rainfall and slowly release it into the garden.
