Projects like these are why I am still passionate about my job. Garden design is often about solving problems and this site was like an exquisite puzzle. The brick, stone and clay tile house dates from the 18th and 19th centuries and demanded an intimate well-proportioned, traditional garden. So far so good but to that we had to marry a renovated stable block, a contemporary pool house and a sizeable new Alitex greenhouse. All the buildings were opposing each other at conflicting angles and I used the garden design to overpower the geometry and make sense of the layout.
A compact parterre, majestic lawn and a series of outdoor seating areas relating to the architectural layouts combine to make a really interesting and usable family garden.
