It’s unusual for a garden show to be inside but the extreme heat and humidity of Singapore means that an air conditioned exhibition hall is the only place that visitors will go. Holes obviously can’t be dug into the concrete floor so you have to build up. I created these three huge overlapping frames to make a dramatic sculptural statement. The idea was that as you move around the exhibit, which is open on three sides, the views are constantly changing as elements are concealed and revealed. The larger frame acts as a shade pavilion with seating inside and appears to hover above a dark swirling water pool. The backdrop is a glowing sculptural glass wall. Having studied tropical plants at college I was hoping to use some of my favourite plants but the organisers were keen that I gave the planting a more English twist which was quite difficult in this climate.
