We could have tried as hard as we liked in this garden but in the end it was always going to be about the spectacular setting with the South Downs towering over the cottage on one side and the flat Sussex Weald rolled out to the North. There was never any doubt about our approach which had to be to embrace the views, to bring them in and let them dominate. Our design therefore had to be subservient almost, not daring to compete and at most picking up on colours, textures and shapes from the countryside beyond and borrowing them for the garden. Fences were hidden to blur boundaries and we removed a hedge barrier at the rear so the garden could roll on seamlessly into a newly created orchard and meadow and into the country beyond
